Happy New Year! Make Your Resolutions SMART.

January 11, 2016

happynewyearIt’s 2016! Did you make a New Year’s resolution? Let me guess; was it one of the following?

  • Eat better
  • Sleep more
  • Exercise
  • Spend time with family

Don’t get me wrong – I like New Year’s resolutions. They offer the perfect opportunity for me to combine two of my favorite things: thinking critically about my life and making a list. But let’s be honest – those New Year’s resolutions I listed above are dumb with a capital ‘D’ and you probably won’t stick to them through January.

Yes, I want to eat better. But why? For how long? What does “better” mean anyway?

Let’s take a look at this list instead:

  • Eat a green salad for lunch 2 times per week in January
  • Go to bed by 10pm Sunday – Thursday
  • Walk the dogs for 2 miles each morning, working up to 3 miles by February
  • Call my mom every other Sunday (I was going to put every Sunday but I am trying to be realistic here.)

What’s the difference?

A New Year’s resolution is just a fancy way of saying that you have a new goal. And with any goal, you need to make it SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

You’re reading a blog on a PR agency’s website, so let’s relate this back to PR.

nypicture2Typical PR New Year’s resolution:

  • This year Client A will be in a business press article

Smart PR New Year’s resolution:

  • In January, I’m going to secure one briefing for ‘Client A’ with ‘Key Reporter’ at ‘Big Important Publication’ by offering said reporter an exclusive on Client A’s February announcement.

Hey, that’s a good idea. I’ll add it to my list.

Happy New Year!
