BPR Thrives: Introducing our Corporate Wellness Program

September 28, 2017

Raise your hand if this situation sounds familiar – you walk into the office early, down a cup of coffee or two, then get settled at your desk to start your day. You spend the next few hours sifting through your inbox, staffing briefings, attending internal meetings and executing on account work. Before you know it, it’s 2 p.m. and you realize you’ve forgotten to eat lunch, so you order something for delivery and carry on staring into the depths of your screen. Rinse and repeat.

It’s all too easy to fall in to this pattern. We love what we do, so it’s easy to work long days at our desks and power right through lunch. But does it really have to be that way? At Barokas Communications, we’re all about striking a balance. That’s why we’re proud to announce Thrive, our new corporate wellness program.

Thrive is a collection of activities we’re trying out in order to help Barokas Communications employees be the happiest and healthiest they can be – physically, mentally and emotionally. If you walk into our offices on any given day, we want you to see our team of really awesome people not only getting sh*t done, but also taking proper breaks, moving our bodies and generally #thriving. We believe we can only do our best work when we’re our best selves, and it’s about time we started working towards that. Here’s how we’re doing it:

Taking regular breaks

No more hours-long computer marathons! We’re all making a point to take a few breaks throughout the day, whether that be grabbing coffee with a coworker, taking a walk around the block or reading a book out on our deck. Studies show being diligent about your breaks not only increases focus but spurs creativity and productivity as well.

Lunchtime walking groups

We know that being too sedentary is bad for our health, so lunch is the perfect opportunity to get moving. Every other week, a group of us use the lunch hour to adventure to a new place in the city on foot. So far, we’ve hit up the food trucks and Great Wheel in Seattle and in Denver, we’ve ventured over to Union Station for a quick bite to eat. Each time we come back refreshed and ready to tackle our next project.

Guided meditation

All the CEOs are doing it, so we’re trying it, too! Once a week, we find a quiet space and go through a guided meditation together. We practice mindfulness, eliminating distractions and just breathing through any stresses we might encounter during the day. For those of you wanting to join us, Headspace and Buddhify are great resources to get started.

Group activity outings

Coming from active cities like Seattle, Denver and Detroit, Barokas Communications employees are already a pretty energetic and adventurous bunch. But once a quarter, we have decided to get out of the office and try something new together. This summer our Seattle office went on a kayaking tour, our Denver team rode bikes around downtown and we’re already planning some fun fall-themed activities, so stay tuned!

‘Iron Chef’ BPR

A big part of wellness is proper nutrition (with a little dessert for balance, of course). Every quarter, we show off our healthy cooking chops with a potluck lunch and the crowning of our ‘Iron Chef’. Holly and Constance currently hold the title, but they’ll be challenged during our tailgate themed competition this fall!

It’s one thing to support each other professionally, but the best companies also find ways to support the whole employee – mind, body and spirit. Thrive is a step in that direction. Thanks for joining us on this journey!
