A Night at the 40th Annual Totem Awards

March 22, 2018

Last night, our team attended PRSA Puget Sound’s annual Totem Awards, which recognizes creativity and accomplishment in public relations. In other words, PR strategies and programs that kickass and deliver big. I’m proud to say that this was our first year entering the awards, and we walked away with multiple wins (eek!).

Our team’s media relations chops and social media strategies rose above the competition and were honored in the following four categories:

Media Relations – VICIS

VICIS is a sports technology company focused on developing highly engineered helmets that improve protection and performance. VICIS’ flagship helmet, the ZERO1, is the most technologically advanced helmet in history and was shaped by some of the world’s leading athletes, engineers and neurosurgeons. Through an aggressive media relations campaign, our team secured over 250 top-tier broadcast and print media hits on the local and national level in publications including CBS Sports, ESPN, Wall Street Journal, among others. Our team’s work generated over 1.2 billion media impressions for VICIS.

Social Media – The Shop

The Shop, a state of the art facility for car and motorcycle enthusiasts to indulge all aspects of their passion, selected Barokas Communications to generate awareness and drive membership around its launch. We managed The Shop’s social platforms, which became the company’s main channel for customer service. Our team played a key role in securing RSVPs for The Shop’s Grand Opening event and hosted a press tour the morning of the event. Guests were wowed by the event, which featured a DJ, food and drinks by renowned Chef Ethan Stowell, and local music icon Macklemore’s ‘White Walls’ Cadillac limo and ‘Downtown’ Moose Bike. In a matter of weeks, we grew The Shop’s Instagram following from 36 to 1,276 (3,444 %) and Facebook following from zero to nearly a thousand.

Media Relations – CanPay Debit

CanPay is a debit payment app for the highly regulated cannabis industry. The company partnered with Barokas to launch its debit solution, drive customer adoption, and generate partnerships from dispensaries in legalized markets. Since launching CanPay, Barokas Communications secured over 100 pieces of coverage highlighting CanPay launches in Oregon, California, and Florida, and the company’s perspective on the burgeoning industry. This coverage has opened many new doors for CanPay and generated inbound business, including a partnership with Safe Harbor and the Financial Institutions Commissioner in Hawaii to bring compliant banking and debit solutions to the Hawaii market.

Public Affairs – Apprenti

Apprenti is a registered apprenticeship program powered by the Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) that trains skilled workers from underrepresented communities –  including women, minorities and veterans – and places them in apprenticeship programs. Apprenti partnered with Barokas Communications to develop and execute a media relations campaign to announce the launch of their program in Washington State and keep the drumbeat rolling as the program expands in other markets. Our team’s work has driven over 80 million impressions to date, which has helped raise awareness of the program and fill apprenticeship cohorts. We have also elevated the program at a national level, securing coverage in top-tier national publications including Forbes and Inc. Last year, we executed a rapid response campaign around President Donald Trump’s changes to the H1B visa program, leading to several stories that positioned Apprenti as a thought leader in alternate solutions working to address the tech talent gap.
