Satellite Startup ICEYE Raised $34 Million To See Through The Clouds
May 24, 2018
Imaging satellite startup ICEYE, which makes satellites that are capable of seeing through clouds to provide clear pictures of the surface, announced Thursday that it has raised $34 million in a Series B funding round. Investors in the round include True Ventures, Draper Nexus, Space Angels, Promus Ventures and others.
ICEYE manufactures microsatellites that are lighter than 100kg but capable of imaging the Earth using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) rather than cameras or spectroscopes. SAR is a type of radar capable of creating both 2- and 3-dimensional images in high resolution. A satellite does this by using its flight path to simulate a much larger radar antenna. And the more satellites there are, the better the resolution of images generated since larger antennae can be simulated.
